An easy messy bun that looks relaxed, not untidy. Simple steps, placement tips, and fixes for buns that slip or go flat.

A messy bun is popular for busy days because it is quick, but a good messy bun still needs a little structure. The goal is relaxed volume, not a bun that collapses after an hour.
Start with hair that has a little texture. Freshly washed, very slippery hair is harder to hold. A light texturising spray or dry shampoo at the roots can help, but you do not need heavy product.
Step 1 — Gather loosely.
Gather your hair where you want the bun to sit — high for a casual look, mid-height for work, or low for a softer finish. Do not pull it tight against the scalp.
Step 2 — Twist and wrap.
Twist the length lightly, then wrap it around its base. Leave the ends a little loose if you want a softer shape.
Step 3 — Pin, do not over-pin.
Secure the bun with a few bobby pins at the base. Too many pins can flatten the volume you just created. Gently pull out a few small strands around the face for softness.
Step 4 — Check the balance.
From the side, the bun should have height without looking top-heavy. If it feels heavy, move it slightly lower or use a second pin at the base.
If you like quick everyday styles, also try a claw-clip style for days when you want the same speed with a neater finish.
