A half-up half-down curly bun is useful because it solves two problems at once: the top section stays out of your face, while the rest of your curls stay visible. The key is balance. If the top section is pulled too tight, the crown goes flat and the style can feel uncomfortable. If it is too loose, it slips.

Start with curls that are mostly dry and already defined. Apply a light curl cream or leave-in conditioner if your hair tends to frizz, but avoid heavy products that make the top section stiff.

Step 1 — Section the top. Use your thumbs to draw a section from just above each temple up to the crown. This is your bun section. Leave the rest down.

Step 2 — Keep some lift. Gently lift the crown section before you secure it. Do not brush the curls out. Let a few shorter face-framing curls stay free if that suits your face shape.

Step 3 — Form a loose bun. Twist the section lightly and wrap it into a small bun. Secure it with bobby pins placed into the base, rather than relying on one tight elastic. Tuck loose ends in one curl at a time.

Step 4 — Check the shape from the side. The bun should sit at or just behind the crown, not too high on top of the head and not so low that it pulls the loose curls flat.

Variations to try

  • Twisted half-up: Twist each side section before joining them at the back, then form the bun. This adds lift without extra product.
  • Soft braided sides: Add a small loose braid on each side before the bun for a more finished, occasion-ready look.
  • Low half-up: Place the bun slightly lower for a relaxed weekend version, especially on thick or heavy curls.

How to keep it fresh

Carry a small spray bottle with water and a drop of leave-in conditioner. Mist lightly and scrunch only the curls that have lost shape. Avoid touching dry curls repeatedly, as that is a common cause of frizz.

What you need

A few bobby pins, one soft elastic if you prefer an anchor, curl cream or leave-in conditioner, and a wide-tooth comb for detangling before styling.
